Figure: figma R. Dorothy Wayneright and MAX Gohkin Big O

Paradigm City is a place without a past. 40 years ago, something happened that wiped the memories of everyone in it. Unfortunately, the people of Paradigm City were very busy before then, making Megadueses (giant robots) and monsters. People who were born after the memory wipe are gaining/recovering memories of the past and using them to build newer threats. Roger Smith keeps Paradigm City safe with the help of The Big O (a faithful giant robot), his butler Norman and the android Dorothy, Roger keeps Paradigm City safe. As problems mount and more memories surface, Roger’s past and Paradigm’s future begin to become suspect…(Source: ANN)

Well that’s the premise of The Big O anime series. This series happens to be one of my favorites. And it just so happens that Max Factory is coming out with a few figures based off characters from The Big O. First off is the figma of Roger Smith’s android assistant R. Dorothy Wayneright. A quick fact about Dorothy: the “R” in her name which stands for “robot” is consistent with naming practices in the science fiction works of Isaac Asimov. Well then what exactly is a figma? Figma is a Japanese action figure line by Max Factory. These figures are highly detailed, poseable, and relatively cheap. These figures make for perfect collectors who don’t want to dish out big money for PVC figures. I will probably pick this one up since I’m a huge Dorothy fan; it also helps that it’s pretty cheap (2070 yen on Amiami or about $25).  Dorothy hits shelves June 2011.

Now in that last picture we see Dorothy in front of Roger Smith’s Megadues Big O.  This action figure is a whopping 30,250 yen on Amiami or about $372 dollars.  Standing at 30cm tall and weighing 1050 grams (about 2 1/3 lbs.) it’s no wonder why it’s so expensive.  It’s also molded in die-cast (metal casting) for improved stability adding to the price.  Although I would very much like to have this awesome figure, it’s just way too expensive. Oh well…

Classic pose!

Swingin' my chain...

Haha it even has Roger's car!

Glow in the dark eyes!

  1. That's extremely sleek. Wish I had the money for one of those.

I also sure hope that this might mean new Big O is on the way. A new season would be spectacular, but the skeptic in me tells me that it's not going to happen. Though I'm curious: I thought Big O was never really popular in Japan, so what's with these figmas all of a sudden?

    • I doubt we'll ever see big o again. as for figures, i couldn't really tell you what the companies are thinking when they release this stuff. there's a michael jackson figma after all…
