Back for Moar!

Hello Moar Powah! How’s everyone’s Friday? Good? Good!

I (SIYM1207) come with oh most joyous news. Are you ready for this? . . . You sure? . . . No shame in admitting if you aren’t . . . alright, here you go:

PLAYABLE MASS EFFECT 3 DEMO COMING JANUARY 2012 ! ! !

According to the man himself, the demo will feature both single AND multiplayer gameplay. Both of which have had fans like myself in uproar for MOAR! I can’t wait to get my hands on this pre-release as it will foreshadow the beginning of the end to my absolute favorite experience in gaming. If it hasn’t been made obvious enough already, I love Mass Effect . . . ALOT. There’s so much this sequel already has to live up to and, with the addition of all the elements I have pain-stakingly “imported” from one installment to the next, it will be interesting to see how this snippet of the epicness that is to come on 3 /6 / 12 will be received. As always, Powah to the Playas!

As some of you may have guessed, I went to New York Comic Con this week just like many of MOARPOWAH’s other writers. I had a wonderful time, met some amazing people, and picked up some great merchandise. While there, I also had the opportunity on Friday to stop by the booth for Creature Entertainment, an independent comic publisher located in the Con’s artist alley. There, I met Juan Navarro, the editor-in-chief, and John Ulloa, their publisher/producer. I informed them that I was a comic reviewer, and they quickly suggested I take a look at their new series Forgive Me Father. I took the first issue home and read it that night. The story gripped me so much I immediately went back the next day and picked up issues 2 and 3. Today I’ll discuss the merits of this up and coming title. Please note that this title is much darker and more graphic than my usual fare, so please use your discretion if such things upset or offend you.

Let the magic begin!

Hey MoarPowah! How’s it going? It’s been a while since my last review, and considering how the new anime season has just started, I figured it’s time for another post. This time I’ll be doing a first impressions on Bones’ anime adaptation of Sakaguchi Ango’s Meiji Kaika Ango Torimono-chō, which the studio has named UN-GO.

Now, just to put it out there, I’m a fan of Studio Bones; they’ve been fairly consistent with the quality of their shows, and they did churn out my all-time favorite anime movie, Sword of the Stranger. I’m also a huge sucker for the detective genre. Therefore, I might be a little biased in my review of the first episode, but I will try to be my usual disdainfully demanding critic.

Without further ado, itadakimasu!

I was sitting seiza style because my socks didn't match my outfit.

So last week was NYCC/NYAF. There really wasn’t enough marketing towards NYAF in my opinion, but otherwise I was happy with how the convention turned out. They opened up a lot more of the Javits Center, so it was much roomier at this year. However, NYAF was entirely secluded on the 4th floor, I’m not sure if even half the people at the con knew about it. Thus, this year’s Artist Alley attendance was surprisingly female. Which was an awkward experience for me at least. I sorta just sat there, with the figurative sweatdrop, as hoards of girls, or hoards of otaku with their girlfriends walked by me and stared both judgingly perhaps also disapprovingly at my boobalicious-woman prints. I’m really surprised I broke even.

That aside, Jack Guo also went to the con. Although he didn’t cosplay, it would’ve been funny if he did. This is just one of the hilarious situations that could have occurred but never did.

G IS FOR GUO. G IS FOR GUNDAAAAAAM.

Yesterday was the last day of New York Comic Con/Anime Festival. Overall, I’m not sure how to feel about this year. This was the first year that NYCC actually sold out, so there was a higher volume of people than the con had ever seen before; however, the con is only 6 years old, so the staff is still working out the kinks in terms of organization and content. The higher volume of people this year and the relative youth of the event was a recipe for disaster. Every panel or booth that was remotely popular was nearly impossible to get into. As a result, I didn’t get into any of the panels I wanted this year, despite waiting in line for 3 hours for the panel about the Avengers film.

Just look at that crowd.

In fact, navigating the panels was so difficult this year that I failed as an animation blogger and didn’t get into the Adventure Time/Regular Show panel today. I really hope that in the future, the people behind New York Comic Con start organizing lines better and planning more panels to keep groups of thousands of people from rushing the popular ones.

After that severe disappointment, I felt I needed to make it up to all you dedicated Moar Powah! readers. So I captured some footage of the exclusive video game demos at NYCC instead. (Forget trying to demo them myself. Those lines were packed too, and even less organized than the ones for panels.)

Guooooooooooo!

So… I recently got Judge into the mameshiba enterprise, and basically it’s a series of beans with dog faces that greet people with disturbing or awkward fun facts.

So we figured, wouldn’t it be funny if Jack Guo were a mameshiba character? There are plenty of awkward fun facts about him.

Just to say, the original mameshiba site is here, and the official YouTube fan channel of mameshiba is here.

I say “Adventures?” with a question mark because the con was much more crowded today than I expected, certainly more so than last year, so I didn’t really do anything notable. I got there a bit late, went to one panel, saw some good cosplays but couldn’t get pictures because of the crowd, met Internet celebrities that I was probably way more excited about than my reader(s) are, and waited for several hours to get into a panel that I was eventually turned away from.

So I’ll keep the updates brief. The one panel I went to was the DC All Access: The Edge/The Dark, which featured the creators of my personal favorite titles of DC’s New 52 relaunch: the non-superhero, independent series such as Animal Man, All-Star Western, and Frankenstein: Agent of Shade. There were interviews with the writers and previews of upcoming issues.

Animal Man #3 cover. This picture does not do the artwork justice.

For those of you who don’t know, today was the second day (though technically the first full day, since Thursday was just a “preview night”) of New York Comic Con and Anime Festival. I absolutely love comic conventions, and since I’m currently based in New York, of course I had to go. This was my second time at NYCC/NYAF, and I must say, I’m impressed with the changes they’ve made from last year. The con is much more spacious and has a more impressive guest list than ever before. Since I had a blast today, I thought I’d share some of the highlights here.

Being the animation enthusiast that I am, of course I was overjoyed to see that Adventure Time had a huge presence this year. There were several posters in the walkway outside the exhibitor hall, including one giant eye-catching banner above the main event hall:

Please excuse the poor photo quality. I’m a terrible photographer, and used an iPhone camera all day because my digital camera is broken. Continue reading »

Once upon a time, someone must have looked at people suffering and thought, “This must be captured on film!” That’s how documentaries were born. Then someone else said, “Reality is stupid. I can make this better!” That’s how pictures about epidemics must have been born, cause I don’t see any other reason why you’d make one of these. Unless you’re really into watching people die lonely, depressing deaths in hospital beds, then you’re just artsy.

This week on Manic Movie Magic, let’s look at this year’s pandemic-picture, Contagion.

Hello all and welcome to another exciting installment of Silverwolf’s Den! This week I’ll be discussing the next chapter in DC’s capstone title, Action Comics! As you may recall I took a look at Issue #1 when it premiered and enjoyed it, seeing great potential in the series despite a few small shortcomings. Did this title propel the story in a positive direction, keep it at the same level, or show signs of decline?
