Oh, Moar Powah readers, there comes a time in every critic’s life when they lose all hope for the medium or hobby or topic they enjoyed talking about. Thankfully I haven’t hit that point in my career yet, but there are just some days when I feel like horror movies might be dead forever…and everyone cheering its demise.

Case in point, Sam Raimi’s 2009 major-let-down-critic-favorite Drag Me to Hell. And no, I’m not even going to try and make a good transition here, I just want to never speak of this film again.

I don’t mean to brag but, I think this is my crowning achievement in at-home-cookery that I have achieved as of yet. I’ve done the impossible, seen the invisible (Row, row, fight the powah) I have harnessed the crisp texture of hot tempura batter and the luscious, cold delight of vanilla ice cream and have transmuted these two opposing forces into one celestial being.

To my dear readers here at Moar Powah, I present to you the secrets of making tempura ice cream at home:

Fried ice cream is actually not as mind-boggling as one would think; it only takes a few kitchen tricks to make this hibachi restaurant staple!

Starshine: Welcome to another session of Objection! I’m Starshine!

Kaushik: And I’m Kaushik!

Starshine: And today we’re going to be talk about one of the most infamous anime series of all time, Neon Genesis Evangelion. Kaushik, you wanna start us off with how you feel about this show?

Kaushik:Well, I wasn’t the biggest fan when I first watched it and still am not today. Just to note I’ve only seen the original TV series and the rebuild moves, not the End of Evangelion movies (though I kinda know what happens in that)

Starshine: I’ve seen the original series, End of Eva, and two of the rebuild movies, as well as read the manga Angelic Days. I’m kind of an Evangelion junkie

Kaushik: Oh, I guess I’ve read the doujinshi Re-Take, which is probably the best thing I’ve seen come out of the universe. I know that doesn’t reeeally count as one of the manga, but it’s popular with a lot of people.

Starshine: It is indeed! So let’s see…any particular reason why you’re not a big fan of the series itself?

SPOILER ALERT: This is why

Marvel’s been talking about and advertising their “Avengers vs. X-Men” event for the last few months and now, finally, we have the first issue in the series. If hype and advertising are to be believed, this event will shake the core of the Marvel Universe and influence events for years to come; whether that is true or not, there’s definitely a lot of energy and amazing comic creators behind these books. How did this introductory issue fare?

Well, since I did a preview for the winter season , I thought it’d only be fair for me to offer some closing thoughts on the winter season.  Actually, looking back at it, it’s kind of funny seeing my opinions now and my opinions then. They’ve changed less than I thought they would. While all the shows aren’t over yet, most of the shorter ones have either ended or will end this week (mostly tomorrow), so for this I’ll cover just the ones that have ended, and make a little mention of a few shows from last fall that have also ended.

This didn't air this season... Or the last, for that matter. But the last episode for Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko came out during this season, and watching it made me realize how much I liked this series, oddly enough. I'll review it sometime.

Just in the times of the greatest, most confusing darkness, comes the light. And so too, after the horrifyingly yellow chicken themed nightmare that was Pyoko Pyoko Ultra comes the salvation of Niigaki Risa’s graduation single Re’nai Hunter.

I think Tsuku got the message when the last single plummeted like the Hindenburg that no one, and I mean no one, wants to see their pop idols dancing around in bright yellow chicken dresses. It makes them feel like they’re watching Barney or some little kid’s show, and that’s not something the fans want to feel… ever.

And so, instead he gave us a more mature video and song to bow out his most senior member and remind us that no, he’s not completely batshit and out of touch. So, without further ado, let’s take a look at the saving grace single of what’s been a disastrous year, Re’nai Hunter.

And lastly, we have the final game. It’s interesting to note that though the series was originally supposed to span six games, they had to cut it short for various reasons (which may include Episode II doing poorly in both Japan and the West). So it may seem like they had to cram the story of four games into one. However, that didn’t really happen. What actually happened was that they wrapped up the story arc of the first planned two games. See, Episode I was originally supposed to contain the stories of the first two episodes we got. Anyway, I don’t think it’s fair to judge a game by its rocky development cycle, so let’s dive in.

And the caption here, "Thus Spoke Zarathustra", refers to perhaps Nietzsche's most famous work. Now, I think parts of it kind of spoil some of the plot, so don't go to Wikipedia just yet.

Judge here. Been out of commission this past week with a bad cold, but I’m back (somewhat). I got the chance to watch The Raid: Redemption earlier today, and let me tell you, it was the most kickass thing I’ve seen in a while.  It got me thinking about the Sleeping Dogs live action trailer, which in turn got me thinking about doing a “top (insert number) live action video game trailers” list.

I’ve done a few other ones before like “Top 10 Zombie Games” and “Most Useless Pink-haired Anime Girls.”  Lists are cool because 1) they’re fun, 2) they make me think about how much I value (or not value) something, and 3) they usually cause people to leave some…interesting comments.  So without further ado, here’s my “Top 5 Live Action Video Game Trailers.”

Honorable Mention: Ghost Recon: Future Soldier

I loved all the futuristic tech they incorporated in this trailer, but I wasn’t exactly keen in putting a military FPS in my top 5. Continue reading »

Once in a generation, a movie emerges as the shining voice of the majority, denoting the new norm. And then after that comes the cult classic that screams expletives at society in an edgy new way that unifies the minorities and rejects that norm. And man, have we gotten a few of those.

Whether it’s The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, They Live or even Office Space and Clerks have laid there path in cinema history.  But what about my generation’s cult classics? Where is my “fuck-you” to mainstream Britney-Spears-royal-wedding-Gucci norm?

This week on Manic Movie Magic, and part two of my special double feature, we’ll take a look at just that with Repo! The Genetic Opera.
