Objection! – Predictions for the 2013 Academy Awards

Starshine5050: Hello everyone! And welcome again to another Objection! I’m Starshine.

Silverwolf: And I’m silverwolf.

Tarabisu: Tarabisu here.

Starshine5050: And we’re going to talk about the Oscars! So let’s get to it – the big question is whose going to win Best Picture. Gentlemen?

Silverwolf: I have no idea!

Starshine5050: You have to at least have a guess!

Silverwolf: Well, I haven’t seen them all, so it’s hard for me to say, but maybe Lincoln. I wouldn’t agree with that 100%, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it happens.

Tarabisu: My hope is for Argo, but my expectation is for Zero Dark Thirty. Not opposed to the latter, but the former is my personal choice. There were several films I very much enjoyed this year, but Argo tops my list.

Silverwolf: Argo was good, but not great in my opinion.

Starshine5050: I disagree, but really? ZDT? If anything, I feel like historical biopics usually win which seems like Lincoln would clinch it. Especially since she was nominated for best director.

This is Zero Dark Thirty, watching its Oscar dreams slowly die.

Tarabisu: Lincoln had a number of historical inconsistencies as well as blattent errors in character depiction. It was very well acted, to be sure, but Zero Dark Thirty is extremely relevant to the current historical context in which it was made, and I almost feel like it’s winning of best picture would be the perfect cap to the last decade, which the Academy likely knows. Sometimes they tend to lean a little too far into relevance and significance instead of pure artistic merit. I loved ZDT, but I could really see it winning on that reason.

Silverwolf: I just feel like American Historicals are great Oscar Bait. I feel like Lincoln has enough historical significance, and was well made enough, to merit a chance at the victory. Again, I don’t want it to win, but I think it has a good shot.

Starshine5050: Personally, as long as its not Life of Pi or Amour, I am okay with whatever is chosen. But lets look at Best Supporting Actor, which is really tough this year. Any predications?

Tarabisu: Oi! Life of Pi was wonderful!

Starshine5050: Ang Lee is way overrated for this film and while it was a visual marvel, I don’t think it was that good. Who do you think will win Best Supporting Actor?

Silverwolf: CHRISTOPH WALTZ! He was so damn funny in Django: Unchained. The man really knows how to act.

ALL. THAT. SWAG.

ALL. THAT. SWAG.

Tarabisu: He’s the perfect actor for Tarantino dialogue. That was a great movie too, now that I think about it…

Starshine5050: I do agree but Tommy Lee Jones was so impressive this year! And Django won’t win Best Picture because of all the squares who vote. Let’s pray it win best original screenplay.

Silverwolf: I feel like Django will be deemed as too “low brow” to win, even though it was a great film.

Tarabisu: It’s funny how I really didn’t think this was a good film year until about a month ago, and suddenly it became great. But I guess that’s how it usually goes. Anyways, I’m sticking to my guns and betting on Zero Dark Thirty. If Hurt Locker can beat ’em all, so can ZDT.

Starshine5050: ZDT may be topical, but it failed to bring in the acclaim that the Hurt Locker did. I thought it was pretty good, but I think it’s not as strong a contender as others.

Tarabisu: Well time will tell the tale, then.

Starshine5050: Any other categories you’re looking forward to? The music ones are surprisingly disappointing this year. And if Brave wins against Paranorman and Wreck it Ralph, I will flip a shit.

Silverwolf: Seriously, Paranorman should win, but I know it won’t.

Tarabisu: Yeah! Wreck It Ralph was fantastic. Deserves every award possible. Well except the humor award, if such a thing should exist.

Silverwolf: I thought it was good, but Paranorman was better. I like the stop motion style when done right.

"What did you say, Silverwolf?"

“What did you say, Silverwolf?”

Tarabisu: I would like to point out that I did not see Paranorman and have no right to say anything about it.

Starshine5050: I just think Brave is unworthy. Both are fantastic, both deserve to win. Though, really, Pirates Band of Misfits? Instead of Rise of the Guardians?

Starshine5050: It makes me hurt inside that such a thing occurred.

Tarabisu: I didn’t see either, but I heard bad things about Rise of the Guardians from my fellow animation students that saw it. I have respect for Aardman so I would have expected it to be good, but I never heard anything. Once again, no right to add any thoughts

Silverwolf: I didn’t see either of those, so I can’t comment.

Starshine5050: Any other categories you guys wanna rip apart?

Tarabisu: Nope.

Silverwolf: Me neither.

Starshine5050: I feel like I care way more about best Director than everyone else. NO ANG LEE. Is all I ask the Oscar Gods for.

Go away, Ang Lee. It's not your year.

Go away, Ang Lee. It’s not your year.

Starshine5050: Any last words?

Tarabisu: I have failed my film major with how little know about directors -.- That is all.

Silverwolf: I honestly think this was a slow year for films. I’ve got very low interest in the Oscars this year.

Starshine5050: Well, that’s all for us here! Tune in next week for another Objection, only here on Moar Powah!
