Cue wild mass guessing!
Over the past week or so, Kyoto Animation released a hip trailer featuring four boys swimming. So what do we do about it? Overanalyze it to extremes of course!
We can see the premise quite easily. Four high school boys are on a swimming team and want to be the best, as evidenced by one of them preparing to swim in a meet. We see four different personalities at hand. I’ll be using the group shot toward the end to reference each of the guys.
So the PV opens with the second from the right guy clasping a bottle of beautifully animated water. He seems to be a friendly sort and the tallest of the crew. A real good guy who either has ladies swooning after him, but he’s not really looking for anything, or a diamond in the rough.
Then we have the guy at the far right, a really boyish member of the group. He’s shown drying off after a swim. The guy has put a lot into today’s practice and it feels good to dry off after a hard day’s work. If anything, he’s the type to be poked around and joked about as the little brother of the team. Most likely to derp around.
In the next shot, we see the guy on the leftmost end surfacing in a powerful way. He’s a real fun-loving guy and the life of any party from his expression and his sexy pose. Most likely to be the most emotional, either really popular inherently or shot down all the time for comedic effect, especially by the next guy.
And finally is the stoic one, who just whips his hair and is first in the lineup. He’s a determined sort and a bit introverted. Likely he’s the most serious member of the team who is least likely to spend time eating cake and drinking tea. He seems to get teased a lot by the previous guy as they exit the scene.
The color of each boy’s trunks is very revealing of their characters. The very feisty one has red trunks and red is a power color in contrast to the stoic one’s cool blue trunks. The tall friendly one has a calm green pair and the kid has a pinkish pair which he may or may not get flak for.
It seems this PV looks like a market test for a possible series or just an animation demonstration. After all, KyoAni has their moments where the quality of animation just skyrockets (e.g the first episode of Hyouka), and the test has certainly gotten a lot of attention since its featuring high school boys instead of high school girls. But is it really out of character for the studio?
Hm. A fiery one, a stoic one, a nice one, and a derpy kid.
Wait…. This sounds just like K-On! but with dudes!
From left to right in the screenshot of the PV we have boy versions of Ritsu, Mio, Yui and Tsumugi! Well, it makes sense that the Four Humors are represented – it is a classic archetype. And it will be about school life amid a goal (the competition) and the cast’s friendships. This is classic KyoAni right here. While it may not feature girls, it’s definitely up their alley on a thematic level. I’d actually like to see this show comes to fruition, it would be a real breath of fresh air and we’d get more of that quality water animation. Yeah, of course there’d be a decent amount of fangirling to wade through, but I’m eager to take the plunge! Join me next time when I teach you how to be eggcellent.
