Give It a Shot! – Welcome to Night Vale

I’m going to admit that I am not the kind of person who enjoys podcasts, or at least none other than our own Tuesday Tunes. That is, until now. One day, my Tumblr dashboard with filled with pictures of floating cats and lights above an Arby’s and the next I was hooked on Welcome to Night Vale.

welcome to nightvale

Welcome to Night Vale is a podcast by Commonplace Books, and updates on the 1st and 14th/15th of the month. First released in 2012, the show follows radio broadcaster Cecil as he delivers the daily news from a small desert town known as Night Vale. The fictitious city is definitely not Small Town, USA. Strange phenomena happen daily, such as a giant glow cloud, hooded figures walking around, and the Sheriff’s Secret Police watching you from their helicopters. Throughout it all, our intrepid radio host remains calm and collected, delivering the “weather” in the form of song, and with special ads for many of the strange places. The podcast is a funny, soothing work that is not only well written, but well performed, mixing dark humor with bizarre human drama. It’s especially great for commuting or long road trips – just make sure your final destination isn’t Night Vale.

As just a regular, hard-working work, often-stressing, procrastination-mastering history and journalism student, I often turn to the silver and small screens for relief, even though I'm only an average cinema-and-television loving viewer, commenting on what, and does not, makes good entertainment. I love horror everything - book, TV shows, games, movies - even though they frighten me terribly. I'm a long time believer of the old saying "When life gives you lemons, don't take life's lemons! Give the lemons back!" So, onward I go, returning lemons and logging an unhealthy amount of screen time for your enjoyment. So please be sure to read my stuff and let me know what you think, I'm alway looking to improve and be the best, most cynical critic I can be!
