Fenrir

A would-be anthropologist, writer, food historian, and professional glutton hoping to combine fandom with her love of food. Ever wondered what a nug tasted like? Is butterbeer alcoholic? If you've asked such questions and are already drooling at the thought of a big old plate of lembas bread, then you're in the right place

Hey guys Fenrir here with a pretty darn-late addition of Food for Thought, but sometimes things happen. And a very important thing that just happened recently was International Women’s Day, this last Friday the 8th! And amidst all the accolades for women writers, scientists, musicians, etc. I believe that we might have forgotten a few important female contributors to our society…

I’m talking about female webcomickers! If you haven’t heard me gush on and on about webcomics before, well here it is again: webcomics are a pretty unique playing field for the independent artist, and especially for webcomickers out trying to get their start or in a field that may not be catering towards female artists (But that’s another issue for another time). So without further ado, here is a selection of some pretty unique webcomics by or involving some pretty creative ladies!

So if you hadn’t heard or were outraged over the results or Seth McFarlene’s atrocious jokes, last Sunday night was the Oscars and amidst the glitz and glamor was a certain heavy wave of tackiness that could have a serious impact on future films. What do I mean exactly? Well, I’ll cut to the chase: the visual effects (VFX) industry is having its own fair share of financial troubles, with some Oscar night antics being nothing short of a major slap to the face about how little Hollywood cares for their VFX studios. Because let’s face it — how many films came out this year that relied heavily on VFX to help get by? The Avengers, The Hobbit, Life of Pi, etc. all rely on the work of these studios to help bring their films to life — so what happened at the Oscars definitely has repercussions for the future of digital artists everywhere that’s run down by the Hollywood machine…

Hey all and welcome to a relatively exciting edition of Fantastic Feasts and Where to Find Them! (We haven’t had some food in a long while it seems!)

Anyhow, tonight is Oscar Night for those of you who don’t know or who weren’t keeping up with Starshine’s Oscar nomination list. And with Oscar night and especially with friends in an art/film school means that some young and hip people will be throwing some fancy Oscar-themed shindigs. So get out your costume skills, try to dress up like characters from your favorite Oscar-nominated-film, and get out your wine, and itty-bitty sausages as you (and a good portion of art students) sit around and watch the proceedings.

Doesn't that look nice and bloody -- really, it smells like patria

Doesn’t that look nice and bloody — really, it smells like patria

But if I’ll be honest with myself, while I may be creative I am not particularly good at costuming. BUT, but, what I am good at is coming up with some kitschy, cheesy, and corny themed recipes. And with a hoard of food-dye leftover from some MLP-themed cupcake experimentation, I decided to support one of my personal favorite Oscar nominees–Les Miserables–and go the extra mile of 1970s convenience-food-recipes and potluck staples in order to come up with this nonsense: The Blood of Angry Men Jello Things.

It’s very patriotic. Long live the revolution.

Hey everyone, Fenrir here with an exciting round table discussion about one of the 3DS’s greatest hits, Fire Emblem: Awakening. So far this game has received consistently high-ratings — something that as a FE-fan makes me very happy and proud to see.  It’s a mutual feeling, I’ve discovered, from other Moarpowah staff members who have some pretty poignant thoughts on Awakening that make it one of the strongest titles of the series.

Hey all and welcome to yet another addition of “Food for Thought” — this time with Valentines Day steadily approaching, I’ve got some suggestions for a fun evening with your special someone! Or well, so long as your special person is into this thing known as “fandom”, you know, those communities that surround movies/books/television shows/video games/anime/etc. — see tumblr for a crash-course in how fandoms operate.

If you’ve been around fandom for the last year you may recognize these two.

But anyhow – if your significant other is, in general, a fan of something or other — then you’re in luck! Because they probably also have a favorite actor (Or actress, but that’s for another post, so stay tuned!), and what better way to show you care than by brushing up on your knowledge of some of their favorite celebs and the diverse movies they star in? Listed here are some of the more (recently) popular actors and an accompanying selection of movies that will definitely make your date’s day!

So it’s approximately one year ever since my Super Bowl post on food — and tonight, which just so happens to be a Super Bowl night — we are privy to some lulzy, terrifying, inspiring events. As of right now the Ravens are winning (Much to Starshine’s dismay) which could possibly change, considering the black-out effects and what-not — but even with the game at stake, there’s always room to munch on something comforting.

Aw yeah, fried mini veggie spring rolls

Aw yeah, fried mini veggie spring rolls

And what is more comforting than fried food?

This year we have a veritable feast of some of our Super Bowl favorites (KFC and Cheesey Bread from our friends at Domino’s), but hey, you know what, growing girls (and boys) need their vegetables. So, why not some vegetables — hidden underneath a nice crispy layer of egg-roll-wrapper?

Seriously, you won’t be crying when your team is losing while you munch on these (relatively) healthy treats!

Hey guys Fenrir here with another Fantastic Feast :3 In light of all of those Tamako Market posts that have been floating around the last couple of days, I contemplated featuring a dessert based on mochi. But since mochi is a bit of an involved process I decided to uh, try something a little easier… So in lieu of an actual mochi recipe, we’re going to try a Japanese-American community recipe staple from Hawaii: Butter Mochi Cake!

Hello everyone and welcome to a rather quick bite of some Food for Thought. Today we’ll be getting a sneak peek at a TV series project in the making: Urbance. Directed by Joël Dos Reis Viegas, senior director at Steambot Studios, Urbance is all about turning the crumbling dystopia trope on its head with flashy, vibrant colors and a strong style that definitely has powerful visual appeal. In fact, while its status may still be up in the air, there is a lot for one to get excited about — I mean just take a look at this concept art.

So why should one get excited about a project like this coming to life? (Read on to find out of course!)

Hello everyone, silverwolf here! Today marks the premier of a new column I’ve developed called “Give It a Shot!” Basically, the purpose of this space is to talk about something I enjoy but is overlooked by most people. In this space, I (or some other writers) will try to convince you, without rambling too long, to check out whatever we’ve chosen. As few as one or as many as three writers may use this space, twice monthly, to discuss these new topics.

This time, I’ll be talking about DC’s fantasy comic series Sword of Sorcery while Fenrir is here to talk about the video game Rhythm Heaven.
