Hello folks, Fenrir here with an unusual bit of “Food for Thought” on the latest Internet meme! So awhile back Kaushik and Pluffei voiced their impressions of the 2013 spring anime season, and notably mentioned an interesting title: Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan). In the words of Pluffei, it’s an anime that looks “really freaking cool” with bold animation and appealing music. A few months later, and a sudden surge in popularity Pluffei was definitely on mark in her prediction that Shingeki would be a show to watch out for.

But, what I find that most people didn’t expect, was the surge in parody videos that take its incredibly catchy theme-song–Guren no Yumiya–to new heights of comedy and the obscene, in a very brilliant way. So what is it about this shonen hack-n-slash a bunch of man-eating-giants that appeals to the masses–or at least, inspires parody?

In honor of Memorial Day, this “Mecha Monday” will take a look at my 10 favorite characters in the Gundam franchise who gave their lives in combat.

10. Heine Westenfluss

Brave Heine was only around for a few episodes, then was cut down by Stella Loussier’s Gaia Gundam (although it was really Kira Yamato’s fault). He was a cool dude who even got to use the classic phrase, “This is no Zaku!” Continue reading »

With seven episodes into each show, it might be a little late in the season to call them previews, so let’s do some impressions. Writer Laevatein has already offered his thoughts on Gargantia but considering how many episodes have come out since his thoughts my opinion should be a bit more comprehensive. The other show I’ll be covering today is Yuyushiki, a cute little slice-of life comedy show premiering this season. With Gargantia also being a slice-of-life title, it’s somewhat surprising that these two titles have anything in common considering their vastly different first episodes, but looks can be deceiving, of course. So, without further ado, let’s dive in~

One Piece Season 4 Voyage 5

A review copy was provided by FUNimation Entertainment.

A few weeks ago, I checked out One Piece Season Four: Voyage Foura DVD set detailing the revelation of CP9 and discussion of Franky’s past. This week, I had the chance to watch the most recent DVD release, One Piece Season Four: Voyage Five. This DVD set contains episodes 253-263 and focuses on the Strawhat Pirates chasing after the sea train Puffing Tom in hopes of rescuing Nico Robin before she is taken to the dreaded island of Enies Lobby. How did these episodes compare to the previous high quality releases often synomous with Funimation?

Railgun - TRAVIS - 2

A review copy was provided by FUNimation

Among Funimation’s newest releases, A Certain Scientific Railgun (To Aru Kagaku no Railgun in Japanese), stands to provide fans of A Certain Magical Index some extra story in the fictitious Academy City. Released only on DVD and available online to Funimation subscribers, Railgun is a 24 episode series that attempts to tell the story of Misaka Mikoto, a high-ranked “Esper” (series jargon for individuals with psychic powers) as she attends school in Academy City, a highly advanced metropolis designated specifically for Esper students. For being one of my most anticipated shows of this season, it took me way too long to get around to finally watching Valvrave the Liberator. An original mecha series from Sunrise, written by Ichiro Okouchi (the guy behind Code Geass), it was just something I had to see. Yes, ha ha, Code Geass R2 was a train wreck, I’ve heard the jokes. Still, I was looking forward to Valvrave to scratch a mecha itch recent seasons just haven’t been able to hit. Writer Laevatein has already offered his impressions of the show, but I hope to give one that’s more current (up to the fourth episode of the show) and maybe just a little different. Without further ado, let’s go~

One of the major anime movie releases of the year, Evangelion: 3.33, has finally seen a blu-ray release recently. While I’m fairly experienced in the Evangelion series, I wouldn’t consider myself a huge fan. Still, I definitely enjoyed  the first Rebuild movies, so I was anticipating 3.33 for a while now. I made somewhat of a mistake not re-watching the first two movies before picking this one up, but in some ways I think it gave me a fresh point of view to reassess how good this movie in particular was. Without further ado, let’s get into the nitty gritty.

A shot from the preview at the end of 2.22. Guess what? This didn't even happen in 3.33

By the way, expect major spoilers from here on in! You’ve been warned~

Cue the fangirls.

Free! promotional poster

So for the past few months, Kyoto Animation has been teasing an anime about high school students doing things. Seems up their alley? You bet. Moe, moe girls all around, but that’s the rub, it’s an anime about high school boys instead! This week the trailer was released set to premiere in July, so what did it tell us? Let’s find out.

Hello everyone, and welcome back to Objection! This week, rather than having a two-on-two debate, we’re doing a round table on the popular anime Psycho-Pass. Four of our staff are going to take turn discussing what they liked the best about the show, if we liked it at all! Each writer will present their case one by one, leaving you to decide who you most agree with. Let’s get started!

Hello, another week and I’ve got 3 more new season previews for you! This time it’s the shows To Aru Kagaku no Railgun S, Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko, and Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru. The titles are quite the mouthful this time around, huh? As far as these shows go, I have a somewhat unique perspective on each of them.

To Aru Kagaku no Railgun S is a sequel, so I’m already somewhat familiar with how and where a show like this can go. Additionally, due to its unique placement in the To Aru universe, this season takes place concurrently with some events that have already taken place in the Index anime. So people that have already seen Index have some idea of what’s coming up.

As for Hentai Ouji, I’ve actually read the manga for this, so I’m a little bit familiar with the premise and direction at least for the first few episodes. The last show, Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru however, is totally new to me and I’ll be treating it as such.

Misaka Mikoto, rank 3 Level 5 ESPer, also known as the Railgun. Can you guess why?
