In the wake of mega-projects appearing on Kickstarter, like the Double Fine game (making over $3 million) and the upcoming Veronica Mars movie (making over 5 million dollars), Zach Braff has now taken to crowd-funding website with his own film idea.

Wish I Was Here is a film similar in tone to his previous film Garden State, but rather than reflecting on his 20s, Braff decided to make a film about finding himself in his 30s. The film, written by him and his brother Adam, revolves around Aidan, a 35 year old father of two who must attempt to home-school his children all while struggling to figure out what he wants in life, reverting back to childhood fantasies of being a Space-Knight.

Braff states in the Kickstarter video that he wanted to use Kickstarter so that he would be able to have full creative control over the project, rather than producers who he refers to as “money guys.” Braff is offering several benefits like art prints, tee shirts, and online screenings of his films to his backers at even the lowest levels of donation. At the time of writing, the Kickstarter has earned just over $280,000 out of its set goal of $2 million after only being live for a few hours.  If you would like to donate to the film, click here.

genshiken-second-season

The June issue of Kodansha’s Monthly Afternoon magazine revealed that the anime adaptation of Shimoku Kio’s Genshiken: Second Season is coming from a new studio. Production I.G will now handle the anime adaptation.

Tsutomu Mizushima (Girls und Panzer, Ika Musume, XXXHOLiC, and episode director of Genshiken season one) is serving as both director and sound director.

Michiko Yokote is returning from the previous Genshiken projects to supervise the series scripts, and Junichiro Taniguchi (Yondemasu yo, Azazel-san, Natsuyuki Rendezvous) is the new character designer. Toshihisa Kaiya (Usagi Drop, Robotics;Notes) and Taniguchi are collaborating as chief animation directors.

For reference, Takashi Ikehata directed the first Genshiken series at Palm Studio while Kinji Yoshimoto directed Genshiken 2 (not to be confused with the upcoming Genshiken: Second Season anime) at studio ARMS.

Genshiken: Second Season will premiere this summer, and the next issue of Monthly Afternoon will announce the new cast members.

white-goodman-bull-by-the-horns

It looks like we’ll be seeing more White Goodman, Ben Stiller’s character in 2004′s Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, in the future. It’s about damn time. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox and Stiller’s production company, Red Hour Films, have tapped Clay Tarver to pen the script for the sequel, which will reportedly see rivals Goodman and Peter La Fleur (Vince Vaughn) team up to battle an even greater force.

For those of you who don’t know who Clay Tarver is, here’s some background info:

  • He co-wrote with J.J. Abrams the 2001 thriller Joy Ride
  • He is working on Quantum Hoops, which centers on a nerdy basketball team at Caltech, set up Disney and also being produced by Red Hour
  • He wrote Men Making Music, about the world of competitive barbershop quartets, also at Disney and being produced by Abrams
  • He worked with Mike Judge on Meat in the Freezer, a satire about hunting for HBO Films
  • He also recently wrote the Jack Black and Shine-produced comedy pilot for Showtime titled The Deep Cuts

Here’s hoping that we hear more info on what is, in my humble opinion, one of the best comedies in the past decade and one of Stiller’s best.

“Oh, I don’t think I’m a lot dumber than you thought that I think that I thought that I was once.”

–White Goodman

fan built bot poll

As anyone who reads follows “Silverwolf’s Den” can tell, I’m a Transformers fan. That’s why I was excited to hear about Hasbro’s Fan Built Bot Poll. For the first time ever, Transformers fans have a chance to vote for the specifics of a new character who will receive an action figure and a comic in the near future. The categories include Faction (Autobot vs. Decepticon), Alernate Mode, Weapon, Color Scheme, and Personality. I’m personally voting for a Decepticon Construction vehicle who wields a Sword, is Red & Black, and has a Valiant persona. Voting is allowed once per day and is open until May 5th! You can vote and find out more here.

The character itself will be released in 2014 to honor the 30th anniversary of the Transformers franchise.

Ever popular mecha harem anime Infinite Stratos is getting a second season. Yesterday’s IS All-Night Festival event confirmed the news. You can watch a promotional video below:

Despite saying RE:BOOT in the video, its is not a reboot, as some sources have erroneously claimed. It is in fact the light novels that are getting a reboot, with longtime artist okiura leaving after volume 7 and CHOCO replacing him starting in volume 8, which releases later this week.

Otherwise, most of the voice cast will be returning. The video also introduces the students Takenashi and Kanzashi Sarashiki. Yasuhito Kikuchi is once again directing at 8-bit, but Kumi Horii is now handling the changed character designs instead of Tomoyasu Kurashima. CHOCO will be handling the mechanical designs, and Hikaru Nanase is back to score the music.

As generic a harem show this may be, I’m excited. There can never be enough Charlotte.

Once in awhile, a company comes along with legions of good ideas. Right now, that company is Valiant Entertainment, publisher of X-O ManowarShadowman, Harbinger, Bloodshot, and Archer & Armstrong. Recently, Valiant announced they’re releasing a free game for Android and iOS devices in mid-April as a tie-in to their upcoming crossover “Harbinger Wars.” In honor of this game, every Valiant title in May will feature a variant cover based on a classic video game. Take a look at them all after the jump!

If you’re not a J-pop fan, or even a fan of Asian pop in general, this might seem a little strange to you but please bear with me. Today, AKB announced that 1st generation member Minami Minegishi was going to be demoted to the Kenkyusei team, meaning she would no longer be an “official” member of the group, but rather a replacement member. On their official YouTube channel, they posted a video of a shaved Minami delivering a tearful apology to her fans. You can see the original video here, and with a translation here.

And what was her terrible crime in need of punishing? Spending a night at a fellow J-Pop star’s home, who may or may not be her boyfriend. Yes, I am serious, this is enough for you to be fired from the Japanese idol industry. This is somehow better than that fate, though it certainly doesn’t seem like it. And why is this wrong? Because idols are supposed to be perfect, pure and single. With a largely male fanbase, idols are mandated to remain single because so many fans feel a personal connection with them and it ruins the fantasy if they have boyfriends. I am not kidding, this is seriously the reasoning. And while in the video, she says she chose to shave her hair, most fans agree she was forced to do it, then go on camera to apologize. She is not the first this has happened to, and it certainly won’t be the last.

A lot of fans, not just AKB48 fans but just general J-Pop fans around the world, have been enraged and greatly upset by this video and what has happened to this young woman. However, this will change nothing within the industry itself. When these women sign up to become idols, they are very clear about who their audience is and what they are expected to do – many of them have seen scandals like these all over the television since they were young. Does this justify how Minami was treated? Absolutely not, but this is the industry they chose for better or for worse. Hopefully, she will be able to rejoin as a full time member soon, and will not suffer many long term consequences due to this incident.

I love Superman, which is why an announcement of a DC animated film retelling one of my favorite stories, Superman: Brainiac by Geoff Johns, filled me with excitement. Today, the Nerdist posted a trailer for the new film titled Superman: Unbound. After watching it, I’m super excited (pun intended)! Given the high quality of DC’s animated line and the strength of the source material I’ve got high hopes for this direct-to-DVD movie. Check out the trailer below and let me know your thoughts!
