Los Angeles was quite a site...

...but I enjoyed San Francisco moar.

My Magneto impression. If you recall, Magneto moves the Golden Gate Bridge over Alcatraz in X3.

Hello Moar Powah! Long time no see! Well I just returned from a 4th of July vacation in California!  It was the first time I had ever been to Los Angeles and San Francisco.  Wait? Los Angeles? 4th of July?  Judge did you go to Anime Expo?! Haha some of you might be asking yourself this question, and the answer is no.  It was a family affair although part of me wished I had at least dropped by to see what it was like.  The thing that made me want to go the most was the fact that Miyuki Sawashiro one of my favorite seiyus was there! In case you’re not familiar with Miyuki Sawashiro’s work, you can check out her roles here.  Some of her roles that I have personally enjoyed are: Celty Sturluson from Durarara!!, Saeko Bususjima from Highschool of the Dead (which I will be reviewing soon),  and Masami Iwasawa from Angel Beats! (the first singer).

You might remember Saeko’s infamous gravity-defying-boobs scene which I use as my sig…

Anyways, I wanted to give you all an update as to what is happening with this site.  As you might have noticed, we have brought on board a few moar writers to help push out moar content.  We started with me (Judge), my brother (LIFE44), and my friend and mascot (shinkiro0).  However, a thing called life unfortunately causes each and every one of us to be busy with various things (school, job, family, etc.).   So we brought on my high school friend Julio (SIYM1207) who has been doing a bang-up job (and I think he’s starting his own site soon so be on the lookout).  Now we’ve added Brett (silverwolf) who handles comics, Greg (Laevatein) who handles otaku stuff, and a few moar who have yet to be introduced.  Each of us will be bringing you a running article with our thoughts on various subject.  You might have noticed that SIYM1207 has already been publishing his running article “SIYM Presents.”  We will soon be publishing these running articles weekly and each one will appear on a certain day (hopefully).  What’s mine called?  My running article will be called “The Courtroom.”  You can imagine why I named it so.  We will also be publishing other running articles not unique to each editor.  The first one in mind is called “Mecha Mondays.”  What’s it about?  If you can’t guess I think you maybe mentally retarded.

And there’s just one moar thing to announce.  I have been extremely slacking busy and have not been pushing out articles as much as I’ve wanted to.  It’s not like I don’t have things I want to write about, or that I already have drafts of many articles that have yet to be published.  It’s just lack of time.  Quoting a friend of mine, “I wish there were 48 hours in a day.”  As a way to address this issue, I have decided to publish all the articles that should have been published in the past two months over the next month.  They will appear in a special pinned post so you can keep track of all the things that have been running through my head (like you really care though…).  It may not be logical to publish stuff that’s a little old (people have no patience these days), but nonetheless I’m doing it because it’ll make me feel better :P .  Until next time people!

My next post will once again be pitting 2 horror titles against eachother in a battle of thrills, chills, and spills. Both games are strong for different reasons and it really all comes down to what you consider to be the best ambassador to the horror genre. Essentially, what makes a good horror story? Is it the suspense? The gore? The atmosphere? The “BOO!”? Or maybe just heavy ordinance against a limping mass of undead? We shall see. In the meantime, I’d like to introduce everyone to what I consider to be one of the most powerful tributes I’ve ever seen. I don’t really get too far into fan creations (much less on the Mass Effect side of things) but this was very well done. Enjoy!

Few things, I will now be dropping the whole “SIYM Presents” tagline that I normally use with post titles. It’s redundant and I think most everyone can figure out who the author is anyway. Secondly, I’m in the process of creating a website of my own. Nothing amazing or of Moarpowah! caliber, just a little project and keepsake for me to update and pass the time. Mostly regarding Mass Effect and other such gaming-related topics. Right now it’s more of a personal blog but I’ll see what else comes up in the process. Lastly, I’ve been having some writer’s block lately and legitimate posts are definitely not flowing off my fingertips. Thankfully, this site has been growing nicely and the current stock of writers is strong. However, I should have something up by tonight. In the mean time, MOAR MASS EFFECT!

What’s up Moar Powah?

This will be the first of what should be a series of “pre-launch items” for the 2012 release of Mass Effect 3. Pretty far off, I know. Most of these will serve as intermissions between my more substantial posts. Enjoy!

Ah yes, Reapers…

EA vs Activision. Dice vs Infinity Ward. Fight! While this post has no intention of supporting either side of the virtual conflict, it would still like to quell the hysteria of what many are referring to as the “COD-killer” (Battlefiled 3). Before we get into disproving the accusations of me being a fanboy, let’s look at the facts. When MW2 launched (4.7 million copies in the first 24 hours), there was no argument as to where to find the largest online shooter experience in gaming. Months passed, noob-tubes flew, players commando’d, rushers UMP’d, campers tactically nuked, and (to put it mildly) MW2 lost its charm for many people. But hey, friendly DICE inbound!  Battlefield: Bad Company 2 launches (2.3 million copies in the first 2 weeks) with the promise of providing a far more interesting multiplayer experience than Infinity Ward’s noob-ish creation. Giant maps, huge teams, destructible cover, and the addition of weapon physics all seemed to point towards DICE’s victory over Modern Warfare.

The numbers greatly spoke the contrary but DICE’s outing with BBC2 was indeed more strategic than any tactical gametype found in Modern Warfare 2. Then, what felt like years later, Treyarch joins the fray with COD: Black Ops! Long story short, the launch (breaking records set by MW2) was huge. However, this time around, I didn’t feel the same sense of shock and awe that the Modern Warfare games delivered. Despite how down-graded the experience seemed (visually at least) compared to Infinity Ward’s vastly superior game engine, Black Ops remains one of the most played experiences in online gaming. Now, we found ourselves yet again drawn into discussion about DICE’s upcoming Battlefield release that promises to re-define modern warfare. Or can it?

When it comes to Call of Duty vs Battlefield, both parties have their strengths and fails. Personally, the key factor in this dilemma (and primary reason why the MW franchise is so successful) is accessibility. Call of Duty (hands-down) has the most accessible approach to shooters. Menu navigation is instantaneous, custom classes are thrown together in seconds, and the 60fps fluidity makes the experience thrilling and fast-paced. While Call of Duty games will never earn descriptions like “perfect,” the compromise of realism allows Infinity Ward to produce immediate satisfaction despite the competition among first-person shooters. Battlefield 3 looks to be the most realistic and aesthetically pleasing experience yet but I for one predict that its “next-gen” enhancements will be over-looked in the grand scheme of things (much like BBC2 and its addition of destructible environments).

As mentioned earlier, the Call of Duty franchise has a prominent history of selling favorably compared to its competition regardless of what innovation is brought to the table. Does this mean developers like DICE are inferior to Infinity Ward/Sledgehammer? Of course not! The point of this post is to highlight that Call of Duty (repetitive and burned out as it may be) will continue to be received well (if only by the fanatical masses) and is no danger of annihilation. Battlefield 3 will indeed be an incredible experience but the odds of its launch rivaling Modern Warfare’s is very unlikely.

E3 2011 is going to be MASSive.

While this will not be a substantial post, I would like to update/clarify a few things going forward into the year.

1) E3 2011: I could not be more excited about the awesomeness that is soon to launch at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo. There are many games and developers that can’t wait to show off their arsenal for the coming months but there is only ONE thing I’m focused on. Mass Effect 3 Reveal! Casey Hudson, Mass Effect’s executive producer, has been hinting at what looks to be a potential gameplay demo of ME3. You can be certain that there’ll be firefights to show off. After all, Bioware’s involvement with DICE has excited much of Mass Effect’s shooter fans. I look forward to some sound enhancements as well as improved weapon customization. Better yet, if Bioware’s learned anything from DICE, the inclusion of gun physics could really bring about a new dimension to Mass Effect’s combat prowess. Can’t wait! For those of you (like me) unable to join in the festivities, be sure to head over to g4tv.com/e3 for full coverage of this year’s biggest and best!

2) BRINK: I sold it. Yeah, I know I said how “fresh” and “fun” it is but it’s possible to not like a good game. Although it really lost its charm for me after a while (no doubt in thanks to my recent resurgence with MW2 ^_^) Bethesda should be commended for being ambitious enough to deliver something different to the FPS scene. Still, I’m a soldier of Infinity Ward and I eagerly look forward to MW3 coming out later this year.

Happy Hunting Moar Powah!

The title says it all. Actually I should be moar specific. Moar Powah! unfortunately is not big enough that we have our own office. We’re just a bunch of crazy kids blogging about crazy stuff from the comforts of our homes.  The place where I work in the city was jacked.  This is actually the second time it was jacked in a week.  All our equipment is gone–computers, screens, printers, etc.  These robberies got me thinking–what if we set up a bunch of traps Home Alone style?  If an 8 year old can come up with elaborate and painful booby traps, then so can you and I.  But in reality, what Kevin did was downright crazy.  Most robbers aren’t that retarded (I think).  Home Alone could never happen in real life…unless you do it Freddie Wong style!  For those of you who don’t know who Freddie Wong is, shame on you.  He’s a pretty famous YouTube director known mostly for his editing and action videos.  His channel freddiew can be found here.  He’s even worked with Andy Whitfield (!!!) from Spartacus (on a side note, I’m very sad that Whitfield had to leave Spartacus due to cancer and wish him a speedy recovery) in a Time Crisis like short which can be found here.  Anyways, Freddie Wong shows us his version of Home Alone, which is sure to scare off any would-be robbers.

50 Cent says, "You need Moar Powah!"

Hey guys, Judge here. Yes I am still alive. I’m sorry for the lack of updates recently.  I have been extremely busy with school, work, and trying to move to my new place.  Thankfully, our new writer SIYM1207 has been at least updating the site weekly.  I definitely want to start pushing out daily content again, but right now until about mid May is utter craziness.  I have a backlog of posts that need publishing, and I will definitely bang some out tonight. Thanks though for checking in! We’re almost at 10,000 hits!

NOTE: “Tomodachi” means “friend” in Japanese

I stumbled upon this cartoon on Sankaku Complex.  It was drawn by a man in Hokkaido and says, “To everybody in the U.S. 7th Fleet: Thank you. The Japanese people will not be beaten.”  I thought this was a pretty cute drawing.  However, some people have tried to make a big deal out of what is nothing but a harmless cartoon expressing thanks for America’s help.  Basically, people believe this shows America’s overbearing nature.  The American flag is bigger, the bald eagle is bigger than the green pheasant (the national bird of Japan…some Japanese don’t even know it’s their national bird), and the pheasant is beat up.  C’mon people.  Stop trying to make something outta nothing.
