Team Fortress 2 today released it’s latest game mode: Mann vs. Machine. Valve’s most popular free-to-play game got even better with this latest edition. Basically, Mann vs. Machine is a co-op mode. From the official Team Fortress 2 website:

Mann vs. Machine is a new co-operative game for Team Fortress 2 that lets you and five friends wage a desperate battle to stop a lethal horde of robots from deploying a bomb in one of Mann Co.’s many strongholds. Take advantage of breaks between waves to upgrade your abilities and weapons. Survive all the waves in any of a variety of missions to earn incredible loot.

If you’re looking for a challenge, however, and are willing to shell out $0.99, you can buy a “Tour of Duty” ticket in the in-game store (Mann Co. Store) and play “Mann up Mode,” which is a bunch of Mann vs. Machine machines across various maps. This is the only way to earn the “incredible loot” (i.e. moar cosmetic items like hats).

Lastly, 35 new achievements have been added, and if you have a question regarding this new mode, check out the FAQ.

Welcome, my friends, to another casual discussion on the myriad issues and schisms that have grown in the nerd realm. Gather around the fire, pull up your fancy leather chair, and have the butler prepare you another brandy. Today we will be exploring where Assassin’s Creed can go from here, how it needs to change, and what will happen to a man named Desmond.

The Persona series, and Shin Megami Tensei in general, is pretty popular, no doubt about that one.  Many of our writers here are familiar with the entire series in one way or another.  Many of our readers are pretty familiar with Persona, as well.  Unfortunately, I’m probably the least familiar with the entire series of the staff, as all the Persona I have under my belt are a few hours of Persona 3.  Pretty neat hours, but still just a few.  I hate backlogs.

So it might seem a bit weird that the least Persona-versed writer is talking about a Persona title.  However, Persona 4 Arena is special, in that it tries to court two different audiences.  The first one, and probably the most apparent one, is the RPG crowd.  Specifically, fans of the Persona and other Shin Megami Tensei games.  The other crowd is the fighting game crowd. Previously on Final Fantasy 5 Four Job Fiesta 2012 Fridays, I got stranded on a new continent, became a very temporary “exotic dancer”, got ravaged by several high level enemies, threw a Phoenix Down at a boss, found some Moogles, and got back to the castle.  Oh yeah, and I finally defeated that Abductor (even though I technically did beforehand).  Hard to beat my party’s resume, I suppose.  This time around, I seem to have been locked out of an area (again), and can only go forward.  Just like last week, really.  Anyway, so with that condition, our party finds itself heading in that vague direction called “forward”.

Welcome to the second post in my new series, “Point of Contention”, where no topic or issue is free from critique and examination. Today, let’s discuss the growing tension between the mobile platform and that of handheld gaming. I swear I am not the onsite vita/handheld guy, it just so happens that these topics and games have been on my mind recently.

First off, let me clarify that it would be incredibly narrow-sighted to claim that the market and industry are not changing. They most certainly are. Nintendo may wish to pretend it functions in a vacuum, but today handheld games exist in the same market sphere as iPhone and Android. The Vita is proof that at least Sony is entirely aware of the mindset changes in consumers, as it emulates the feel, design, and function of mobile. More people can say that video games, in a wide, engrossing sense of the term, are a part of their lives now than ever before. This sharp increase in players is perhaps larger than it was when the Wii exploded onto the wishlists of children everywhere. Continue reading »

It’s been 4 years since Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots was released, and it finally has trophies. Yesterday, a patch was released that allows you to earn trophies for one of the PS3′s best titles. Konami had this to say about the patch:

The download will be automatically implemented the next time you login to PlayStation Network with Hideo Kojima’s masterpiece, and adds 34 Trophies to the game. The trophies reward players for skilled play and for finding easter eggs such as using a drum can to knock down enemies. There’s never been a better time to revisit one of the PlayStation 3′s most acclaimed titles.

You can  check out the Metal Gear Solid 4 trophy list here. Some of the them are pretty weird, but I’m not surprised due to Hideo Kojima’s quirky humor. It’s important to note that you cannot earn trophies using your old save files. If you need an excuse to pick up this title again (or pick it up for the first time), now’s your chance. I know my brother LIFE will be revisiting this game pretty soon. Happy hunting!

Overkill Software, the developers of PAYDAY: The Heist, today released the much anticipated “Wolfpack” DLC.

The DLC includes:

  • New Handgun: The STRYK, Full Auto Pistol
  • New Primary Weapon: The AK, Automatic Rifle
  • New Secondary Weapon: The GL40, Grenade Launcher
  • New Deployable Equipment: Sentry gun
  • 2 New Heists: Undercover (transfer money to your account from the IRS) and Counterfeit (secret operation in Florida)
  • New Skilltree: Raise your level cap to 192
  • 2 New Player Upgrades: Tool Kit and Body Armor increase
  • Hosting Ability: Invite friends to play in the new DLC maps even if they do not own the DLC themselves
  • 6 New Trophies to Achieve

What really stands out in this piece of DLC is the hosting ability; I really have to give props to Overkill for allowing players who don’t want to purchase the extra goodies to play the new heists. This is incredibly thoughtful, and this move is sure to bring new fans for the developer. Also, we’re not getting ripped-off either, as this DLC provides a bunch of new content instead of gimmicks like costumes. DLC done right; how refreshing!

Anyways, I’ve been playing a lot of PAYDAY as of late with my brothers and former writer SIYM (check out his guide on how to make bank here), and this new DLC will keep me addicted a while longer. We were already have so much fun with the recently released “No Mercy” heist, which is the Left 4 Dead crossover I reported on a little over a month ago. I also realize I should get a review up of this awesome game some time in the future. Once again, thanks Overkill; looking forward to moar DLC in the future (that’s rare coming from me).

(A bit of a stretch to call these first impressions, I suppose.)

As you may recall from one of my earlier posts, I was singing Just Cause 2′s praises.  I also mentioned that it’s some of the best video game fun I’ve had in a while.  I’ve played it a bunch more, and my opinion of the game has only changed slightly, if even at all.  If you’ll allow me to clarify though, you’ll be hard pressed to find a game that has more pure, visceral fun than Just Cause 2. There is something utterly beautiful about falling. There are few sensations that amount to the rush of letting go and letting perhaps the most profound force of physics take control. Gravity, the eternal bound by which we live our entire lives, goes unchanged without compromise. It is this fact, perhaps, that drives humanity to crave control over it. We’ve mastered the science of lift and speed to defy gravity with flight, and skydivers tease gravity’s fatal strength by understanding properties of air. It should be no surprise, then, that a game revolving around the control of gravity be a bombastically satisfying experience.
