While I certainly managed to give you a fairly solid taste of what I consider to be the very best music the Final Fantasy series has to offer in my first episode of Tuesday Tunes, I didn’t even scrape the overall surface. And so, after exploring a wide variety of genres, eras, and composers, I thought I’d take this week to bring us back to the fine work of Nobuo Uematsu.

A quick word from the author: Today’s episode is a rather special one, in that it’s really short due to various reasons that I will shortly explain (and apologize for).  With that in mind, let’s get this mini-episode on the road.

Previously on Final Fantasy 5 Four Job Fiesta 2012 Fridays, Bartz had a 16 bit brawl with a werewolf, got attacked by a summon repeatedly, ignored said summon when he begged for my help, and threw money at a plant.  Wow, we’re kind of assholes, aren’t we?  I should probably mention that the plant was a killer plant.  That makes things justifiable, of course.

Well, anyway, after getting the dragongrass, the party goes back to Galuf’s place, whereupon they head out to meet the sage Ghido, who knows a way to infiltrate Exdeath’s castle.  Except Exdeath is evil, and sunk the island Ghido lives on.  Go proactive antagonists!

Previously on Final Fantasy 5 Four Job Fiesta 2012 Fridays, I got stranded on a new continent, became a very temporary “exotic dancer”, got ravaged by several high level enemies, threw a Phoenix Down at a boss, found some Moogles, and got back to the castle.  Oh yeah, and I finally defeated that Abductor (even though I technically did beforehand).  Hard to beat my party’s resume, I suppose.  This time around, I seem to have been locked out of an area (again), and can only go forward.  Just like last week, really.  Anyway, so with that condition, our party finds itself heading in that vague direction called “forward”.

Previously on Final Fantasy 5 Four Job Fiesta 2012 Fridays, I beat up a bunch of bosses, transported to another world, got abducted (bullshit!), broke out of a castle, beat up some dudes on a big bridge, and got stranded on some unknown continent.  Last week was probably the most exciting episode yet, what with meeting Gilgamesh, who is a true badass, and one of the most memorable things about this game, and other stuff.  Anyway, this week’s episode (for the record, I’m retroactively relabeling these posts to be “episodes”) will be a tad shorter than usual, since I’ve been rather busy, and haven’t found time to sneak in enough play.  I’ll try to make it up to ya sometime.  Anyway, enough of a preface, let’s throw some more money at the game and hope I kill some things! Previously on Final Fantasy 5 Four Job Fiesta 2012 Fridays, I beat down the amazingly (and annoyingly) defensive Archeoaevis, and got the earth crystal jobs.  I was granted the honor of the samurai class (read: yamato damashiiiii), which just about rounds out my capitalism party.  With that in mind, capitalism, ho!

Now, samurais are pretty cool.  They can use katanas, which differ a bit from regular ol’ swords, but they do respectable damage.  Granted, not quite as much as my dual-moonring blade ninja setup, but still a decent amount.  They can take more hits than a ninja can, so it balances out.  Samurai can also randomly block attacks, which makes them survive longer.  Always a benefit. Previously on Final Fantasy 5 Four Job Fiesta 2012 Fridays, I defeated Ramuh and obtained his summon (that I cannot use).  Since I didn’t get a new job that time, I have nothing to really preface.  So I guess I’ll jump right in.  Be warned though, the road to the next job is a rather long one.

As is the road to mastering the red mage.

Previously on Final Fantasy 5 Four Job Fiesta 2012 Fridays, I defeated Liquid Flame, stole all the treasures in the exploding castle, and got the hell out of there with two seconds to spare.  As you can see, this was a lot more exciting than just beating up some stupid, raging turtle.  Anyway, the fire crystal jobs are weird, since you get two of them a short time later.  Anyway, luckily for me, I got the Ninja class, which was available immediately.

Ninjas are pretty awesome, they can equip two weapons at once, and can throw stuff.  Equipping two weapons means my damage output is going to be pretty damned high.  Of course, not “breakin’ rods erryday” high, but they’ll be quite useful when all I want to do in a battle is mash attack.  That’s not all, either.  Ninjas also can throw stuff.  I’m sure I don’t have to explain this part, but I can throw pretty much any sort of weapon or item.  Thrown weapons or items do great damage, but as you can imagine, they use up the items you throw.  Once again, I’m stuck with a job that will perpetually drain money.  Can’t say I’ll ever look forward to living the life of kings. Previously on Final Fantasy 5 Four Job Fiesta 2012 Fridays, I defeated Garula and got the water crystal jobs.  As luck (read: a random number generator) would have it, I got access to the Red Mage job.  Now, the red mages are unique in that they’re mainly utility, though their offensive and defensive options are still much better than the thief’s.  Red mages in FF5 can use low level black and white magics, as well as other types, such as time magic.  I’m not sure if they can use low level summons as well, but even if they could, I probably wouldn’t bother.

Unfortunately, as a result of being a low-level hybrid, red mages can’t use high level spells.  This means that come endgame, their spells don’t have much of a punch anymore.  Fortunately, certain other aspects were created to offset this scaling problem.  The first one is that red mages gain access to nearly every status spell under the sun.  Granted, it’s harder to hit enemies with status effects in a Final Fantasy game than in, say, Baldur’s Gate.  Despite that, there are bosses out there that have one or two status vulnerabilities; vulnerabilities that can usually tip the scales in your favor considerably.  Continue reading »

Final Fantasy V is a pretty awesome game, simply because there’s an amazing amount of variety. Not only do you get access to a host of jobs, but you can also combine the abilities of other jobs you’ve trained in, and even mastered. Final Fantasy V is very popular for this sort of reason.  No two FFV playthroughs are the same, after all. Not only that, but the number of challenges available is simply staggering.

One of the more popular challenges, if not the most popular, is the Four Job Fiesta. The Four Job Fiesta is an annual challenge where players are given four random classes, one for each crystal, and are forced to complete the game with those four jobs alone.  You can make the challenge even harder too, like hard mode, where the jobs can be from any crystal you got so far, and not just from the newest selection, or a berserker-only mode.  It’s quite popular too, as the Four Job Fiesta is also a pretty decent charity, as well.
