Today I’ll be giving you my top 12 video game intros.
Honorable Mention: Darksiders
The short intro explaining the back story of the war between Heaven and Hell was great. Then to see NYC fall under attack only to have War epicly enter was even greater.
12. Halo: Reach
Halo: Reach provided me the best story of all the Halo games thus far. The opening only enhanced that. We see Reach in ruins, then we flash back to when Noble 6 joins the team. The stage is set, and it’s epic.
11. Final Fantasy XII
We start with a very happy moment; a wedding between Ashe and her husband (can’t remember his name). Then the scene shifts to one of battle and death. The action is intense, and nothing is left but tragedy. A great opening cinematic experience. Although personally, I liked the pre-menu opening better.
10. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
Hey I love Uncharted. But the opening is not super amazing. It’s a scene out of a typical action movie. James Bond even. But it’s moar memorable to me than the first 3 on my list.
9. Kingdom Hearts
I love the original Kingdom Hearts (and the sequel). But now, I look at the series with a hint of disgust because of the fandom and spin-offs. It’s insane. But, at the time when I first played KH, I was completely captivated.
I really enjoyed Homefront; it created a unique story, and I was eager to see it unfold. The use of real life events mixed with fictional ones was a great touch. It immediately grabbed my attention. C’mon THQ, don’t die!
7. Final Fantasy X
Man it’s getting tricky now. I give the nod to FFX at 7 over the previous entries because of the music; it catches your attention right away. You got awesome underwater rugby and a dude with a giant sword and sunglasses who’s all badass. And a giant tidal wave with a big ass monster. Yup, epic.
Entering Rapture for the first time is one hell of an experience. That is all.
5. Deus Ex: Human Revolution
The sheer level of detail and quality absolutely blew me away (along with the rest of the game). They say they beginning sets the tone for the rest of the game; this couldn’t be moar true for Deus Ex: Human Revolution.
4. Batman: Arkham City
I don’t think I need to tell you how much I love Arkham City (see my review here). I thought the opening to Asylum was good; this takes it one step above. Just the whole sequence of Bruce getting captured, beaten up a bit, then breaking free, kicking ass, and donning the suit was all incredible.
3. Metroid: Other M
I’m a huge Metroid fan, so maybe I’m a bit biased. Nonetheless, seeing Samus in one of her most memorable battles through flashback was exciting. Then to see the blonde beauty herself and fully voiced topped it all off for me.
2. Mass Effect 2
This was my game of the year in 2010. It is the gold standard for modern day RPG’s, offering an incredible story and outstanding gameplay. Like Deus Ex: Human Revolution, it was great from beginning to end.
1. Final Fantasy VIII
There have been many incredible intros, but nothing will ever beat the beginning of Final Fantasy VIII. The music for this intro (Liberi Fatali) is one I will never forget. In fact, I remember just about everything that transpires in this intro. Gunblades crashing against one another, crescendos at perfect times, man this still sends chills up my spine.
Some bonus material:
Even though these aren’t intros, they’re pretty fucking awesome. Take a look.
