Previously on last week’s NYCC: Laevatein, after returning from an informative visit to the Bandai and Sunrise industry panels, he found himself waiting on the line for Star Wars: The Old Republic, which lead to an experience he had trouble calling an MMO.
So after that, my Saturday consisted of more wandering around as well as an attempt to get on the line for the Avengers panel, which failed miserably, but that’s okay: I heard it wasn’t all that great anyway. At any rate, I did meet David White and bought his two books (and got them autographed, too!), as Judge mentioned here. After that, I got on the line to play Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom, and my friend and I chose exclusively new characters. With Phoenix, he’s definitely more of a trap/secondary character master. Kinda like Carl from BlazBlue, actually, with traces of Litchi. I liked Vergil quite a bit, though I couldn’t really get a handle on what he was using; I’m still partial to Dante though. The last character I used was Ghost Rider, but as I got slaughtered using him in five seconds, I have next to nothing to say. Still though, his chains are pretty important.
After that, I waited on the Assassin’s Creed line to play some of the Revelations multiplayer. Now, I don’t mean to brag, but I’ve never played the multiplayer in Brotherhood, yet I managed to place second place, only losing to one of the Ubisoft representatives. I guess that goes to show that the multiplayer is really a lot more intuitive than reflexive. At any rate, regarding the gameplay, the idea is really novel, and I assume they touched up on some things from Brotherhood, but kill detection is really rather finicky. Sometimes, I would get assassinations, and sometimes, the game wouldn’t recognize them at all, which would wind up killing me. I’m also not so sure about the map size we played on: I know for a fact that some of the Brotherhood maps were actually a good deal larger, and I’m not really fond of small maps. Granted, smaller maps make it such that things happen quicker, but I feel like it pressures both predators and prey too much. Still, I only saw one map, so I’m not about to judge the multiplayer based on one map alone. And that concludes my Saturday experience!
On Sunday, the first thing I did was go to the Guilty Crown first two episodes screening and Q&A session. I actually like the show, despite not feeling the writing. It has potential, and great designs and music, but I feel like the writing is pretty average so far; it tries to cover a whole lot of common anime ground, but it has too little to call its own at the same time. Guilty Crown’s actual identity, though small, is finally starting to emerge, so that’s a good thing. What followed the screening was a short “talk about this concept art!” session, which was honestly kind of boring. However, the Q&A session was interesting. A lot of it touched on Guilty Crown’s inspirations: Code Geass, Ghost in the Shell, and Eden of the East. While the similarities to Code Geass are way too uncanny, it’s harder to see what Guilty Crown takes from the latter two. While the latter two are similar because of how they handle socioeconomic and political questions and themes, Guilty Crown has shown almost none of that. In fact, I can draw more parallels to Fractale than those two, thematically (and Fractale was pretty mediocre). Design-wise and art-wise, however, Guilty Crown looks a lot like Ghost in the Shell: they both are set in cyberpunk worlds, so it’s not too hard to see how Guilty Crown borrows from Ghost in the Shell, artistically. Other interesting tidbits that came up are the type of story it’s trying to tell (a “boy meets girl” story), as well as “while it seems like it mostly has shounen elements, it also has quite a few seinen elements, too.” All in all, I came out from the Q&A session feeling like I understand more about the show than what the anime itself was trying to show me.
Sunday started to wind down by this point, but I still got the Guilty Crown poster they were handing out signed by the staff later, as well as go to the Anime News Network panel, ask a question about their streaming service (specifically, “Whatever happened to it?”) and got a free copy of the King of Eden BD as a result. Not wanting to have an incomplete collection, I snagged the Paradise Lost BD at the Funimation booth, as well.
That’d end my Sunday, actually. Overall, while I didn’t go to as many things as some people, I had a really fun time, as well. Unlike most people, I don’t think it’s fair to say that NYAF was solely the fourth floor. There were quite a few panels in the normal panel area, and quite a few of the booths on the show floor are anime related. In fact, only the artists’ alleys were separated, as well as a stage for some stage appearances/panels. Still, it was a lot better than last year’s NYCC, as we now had a lot more room, in addition to better organizing and placement (which stuck ALL the NYCC activities in one segment of the first floor, one small segment). In a few years, I can totally see NYCC and NYAF running optimally.
