Mecha Monday: Top 5 Non-Gundam Mobile Suits

The Gundam franchise is populated with hundreds of Mobile Suits of every shape and size you can imagine (and some you probably can’t!). Obviously, lots of people are quick to pick the Gundams as their favorite, arguing whether Epyon is superior to the RX-78 or if the Alex could trounce the Exia. I, however, have always loved the grunt types. Read on to see my five favorite suits from the Gundam franchise!

5. Flag

Gundam 00 is far from my favorite Gundam series, but I must admit I loved the Flags. The Union, that world’s equivalent of the Americas, deployed these bad boys in their military. Graham Aker, one of their commanders and one of my personal favorite characters, went so far as to eschew more advanced mobile suits later in the series and swore to beat the Gundams with his Flag (for those not in the know, that’s like taking a tissue to a gun fight). I’m really fond of the simple color scheme on these guys and the fins prominent on both their shoulders and sides of their head.

4. Mercurius

The Mercurius was one of two Mobile Suits (along with the Vayeate) designed for Oz by the captive scientists who built the Gundams in Gundam Wing. This suit has something I haven’t seen on any other which is a special force field to protect it from powerful blasts (it’s generated by those little black disks attached to the suit’s back). This suit also wields a combination shield and beam sword, along with a pistol, making it a great fusion of offense and defense. Sadly, it only had a few shining moments in Wing, but it’s a suit I won’t soon forget.

3. Kampfer

First appearing my favorite Gundam series, Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket, the Kampfer is one of Zeon’s precision-strike suits with more weapons on it than you can imagine. It looks awesome, every scene in every series it appears in is amazing, and it can even stand up to Gundams! The way it’s designed is pretty interesting, too, since it jettisons weaponry after use in order to lighten its weight and conserve fuel. Right now, I’m trying to get my hands on a model of one of these bad boys…

2. Zaku

I feel like this one really needs no explanation, but I digress. Zakus are THE mobile suit. They’re the original in the Gundam universe, and the first one ever seen in a Gundam series is when two Zeon scouts enter Amuro’s colony on a scouting mission. Zakus have a unique design and are instantly recognizable, even by many people who aren’t fans of Gundam. The cyclopean eye is memorable, as are their numerous hoses and lime-green color scheme. Zakus have become so popular that every year in Japan there’s a modeling contest where entrants are only allowed to use Zaku model kits, highlighting just how great this foot soldier really is.

1. Gouf

Ah, the Gouf. With my love of Zakus, it’s no surprise I’d love this model which is basically just one of the green grunts cranked up to 11. Their weapons, based on electricity and heat rods, are rather original and look awesome! Goufs are especially memorable thanks to Ramba Ral’s “this is no Zaku, boy!” declaration and Norris Packard’s amazing skills in a Gouf Custom during 08th MS Team. I personally own two different Gouf models, and this close-combat oriented bad boy will always have a special place in my heart!

Well, that’s it for this list! Do you agree with my choices? What’s your favorite non-Gundam mobile suit?
